RBI Bank Customer Rights: Is a bank employee putting you off by saying "lunch time" or "come back later"? Learn about the RBI rules that empower you and teach such employees a lesson.
RBI Bank Customer Rights: Most of us have at some point been subjected to the bank's seemingly never-ending "lunch break." You arrive at the counter, and the employee inside, without even listening to you, says, "It's lunchtime, come back in an hour," or "The server is down, check tomorrow."
Often, we wait quietly or turn away because we're unaware of our rights. Reserve Bank of India (RBI) regulations state that banks are for your convenience, not you at the bank's mercy. Let's explore how you can take action against someone the next time they harass you at your bank.
The truth about lunchtime
According to RBI regulations, banks do not have an official lunch break for customers during which business must be completely suspended. Bank employees may take turns going for lunch, but they must ensure that a counter is always open. If an employee completely stops work and makes you wait, it is a clear violation of the rules.
Ask the bank manager questions
If an employee isn't listening to you, instead of wandering around, go straight to the bank manager's cabin. Every bank has a complaint register. You can file a written complaint there. In most cases, the manager's intervention will get your work done in no time.
Even if the manager gives up, don't give up. Every bank has a toll-free helpline number and an online complaint portal. You can find the number of the "Nodal Officer" on the bank's website and call or email them. Banks take these complaints very seriously because their records go directly to the head office.
Complain to the Banking Ombudsman
If your complaint remains unresolved within 30 days of filing a complaint with the bank, you can approach the RBI's Banking Ombudsman. This is the most effective method. Complaints can be made to the Ombudsman through various channels.
- Online Complaint: Visit https://cms.rbi.org.in and click on 'File A Complaint'.
- Email: Write your problem and send it to CRPC@rbi.org.in.
- Helpline Number: You can also register your complaint by directly dialing 14448.
