The PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February 2024, aims to meet future electricity needs and promote clean energy. Under this scheme, central and state governments provide subsidies for installing solar power plants on rooftops.
Now the countdown to the scheme's end has begun. According to the countdown counter on NEDA's website, the scheme will close on March 31, 2027, meaning the subsidy will be available until that date. At 6:42 pm on June 9, 2026, the website recorded the remaining time to avail the scheme as 295 days, 05 hours, and 17 minutes. The counter clearly states that the time to avail the scheme's benefits is running out.
Under this scheme, solar plants have been installed in 43,000 homes in Varanasi as of June 9, generating 145.30 megawatts of electricity. With this achievement, Varanasi ranks second in the state, while Lucknow ranks first with solar plants installed in 108,056 homes, generating 373 megawatts of solar energy.
Solar panel installation cost under the scheme: The total cost of installing solar panels up to two kilowatts under the scheme is approximately ₹1.20 lakh. This includes a subsidy of ₹30,000 from the state government and ₹60,000 from the central government. The remaining amount is borne by the consumer. The central and state governments provide a maximum subsidy of ₹1.08 lakh for a three-kilowatt solar plant.
The end-of-project countdown on the PM Surya Ghar Yojana website indicates that the scheme's launch set a goal of installing solar panels in 10 million homes nationwide. The three-year deadline was March 31, 2027. However, given the country's success in meeting future needs through solar energy, the scheme will not be discontinued.
