The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), launched with the aim of connecting every citizen of the country to the banking system, has completed its 12th year. Launched in 2014, this scheme has completely transformed the framework of financial inclusion in India. According to government data, as of August 19, 2026, 59.09 crore Jan Dhan accounts have been opened in the country. The common citizen, who once avoided the doors of banks, is now not only saving but also directly connected to social security schemes like insurance and pension.
How historic the beginning of this initiative was can be gauged from the fact that in the year 2015, more than 1.8 crore accounts were opened under the scheme within just one week, for which it was recorded in the Guinness World Records.
Women's participation and expansion in rural areas
Women and rural populations have played a significant role in opening Jan Dhan accounts. Of the 590.9 million accounts, 329.2 million belong to women, marking a significant achievement in empowering them financially. Looking at the geographical data, 459.5 million accounts have been opened in rural and semi-urban areas, while 131.4 million accounts are operational in urban areas.
The extent to which the general public's trust in the banking system has strengthened is evident from the balance in the accounts. In March 2015, the total deposits in Jan Dhan accounts were Rs 15,670 crore, which has now increased by more than 20 times to Rs 3,16,514 crore. Global institutions like the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank have also praised this model of India. The country's Financial Inclusion Index, which was at 53.9 in 2018, has increased to 67 in 2026.
Free accident insurance from zero balance to ₹2 lakh
A Jan Dhan account isn't just a simple savings account, but offers a wide range of financial benefits. There's no requirement to maintain a minimum balance.
- RuPay Debit Card: A RuPay card is issued along with the account, which works at ATMs and Point of Sale (PoS) machines across the country.
- Free accident insurance cover: Accounts opened after August 2018 offer accidental insurance cover of ₹2 lakh. The premium is not paid by the account holder, but is borne by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
- Overdraft Facility: One family member can avail overdraft facility up to Rs 10,000 after satisfactory operation of the account for 6 months.
Additionally, this account is directly linked to Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). It's also useful for availing benefits of government schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana, Suraksha Bima Yojana, Atal Pension Yojana, and Mudra Loans.
How to open your Jan Dhan account?
Opening a Jan Dhan account is extremely easy and accessible. Any Indian citizen can apply by visiting any public or private bank branch or a "Bank Mitra" (Business Correspondent). There is no upper age limit, and the option to open a joint account is also available.
To open an account, you need a PAN card, voter ID, or other recognized identification document. You also need to submit a passport-sized photo and proof of address. The account is activated immediately after document verification. Deposits in this account earn regular interest, just like a regular savings account.
