Today, smartphones aren't just a means of calling and messaging, but they also contain banking apps, personal photos, social media accounts, and important documents. Therefore, instead of panicking over a phone theft, you should immediately take necessary security measures.

1. Lock your phone immediately.
Use your phone's Find My Device (Android) or Find My (iPhone) feature from another mobile device or computer. Remotely lock the phone and display your alternate number or message on the screen. If recovery is unlikely, consider performing a remote data erase.

2. Immediately block the SIM card.
Call your mobile network operator to block the SIM card associated with the stolen number. Then, obtain a duplicate SIM card for the same number. This will help prevent misuse of OTPs and calls.

3. Secure banking and UPI.
If your phone has banking, UPI, or digital wallet apps, contact the relevant bank or service provider immediately. A safe bet is to temporarily block UPI services and mobile banking.

4. Change important passwords Change
passwords for email, Google/Apple accounts, social media, and other important services from a secure device. Where possible, activate Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) and sign the stolen phone out of the accounts.

5. File a police report.
Report the phone's theft to the nearest police station. Carry the phone's IMEI number, bill or proof of purchase, and identification. You can also initiate IMEI blocking through the government's CEIR system available in India.
