The demand for compact SUVs continues to grow rapidly in India. With their small dimensions, SUV-like design, practical interiors and competitive pricing, models under four metres have become popular among Indian buyers.
The segment witnessed strong competition in July 2026, with Tata Punch once again taking the top position. However, the biggest surprise came from Maruti Suzuki Fronx, which moved ahead of Tata Nexon to secure second place.

Tata Punch retains the No. 1 position
Tata Punch remained the segment leader in July with sales of 21,313 units.
In July 2025, Tata sold 10,785 Punch units. This means its sales increased by around 97.6% year-on-year.
With more than 21,000 units sold in a single month, the Punch accounted for around 18.3% of the segment's sales and continued its strong run in the Indian market.
Fronx overtakes Tata Nexon
The biggest change in the rankings came in second place.
Maruti Suzuki Fronx recorded sales of 19,473 units in July 2026, compared with 12,872 units in the same month last year. This represents a year-on-year growth of around 51.3%.
The strong performance helped the Fronx move ahead of the Tata Nexon.
Tata Nexon sold 17,471 units in July, registering approximately 36.2% growth compared with the previous year. Despite its strong performance, it had to settle for third place.
Brezza sees a decline in sales
Maruti Suzuki Brezza ranked fourth with 12,055 units sold in July 2026.
The company had sold 14,065 units of the Brezza in July 2025, meaning sales declined by around 14.3% year-on-year.
The Brezza has recently received updates, including changes to its design, features and powertrain lineup, making it one of the important players in the compact SUV segment.
Hyundai Venue takes fifth place
Hyundai Venue secured the fifth position with 11,095 units sold in July 2026.
The SUV recorded a significant improvement compared with July 2025, when Hyundai sold 8,054 units. This translates into year-on-year growth of around 37.8%.

Punch continues to dominate the segment
The July sales figures show that competition in India's compact SUV market remains intense. Tata Punch maintained its No. 1 position with a substantial lead, while the Fronx made an impressive jump to second place by overtaking the Nexon.
With several manufacturers continuing to update their compact SUV offerings, the battle for the top spot could become even more competitive in the coming months.
