The Tata Nexon could receive one of its biggest updates yet with the arrival of the next-generation model in 2027. Tata Motors has reportedly started preliminary testing of the new-generation SUV, which is being developed internally under the codename Garud.
The upcoming Nexon is expected to receive major changes to its platform, exterior design, cabin, technology, and features. However, the existing petrol and diesel engines are reportedly likely to continue.
New ATLAS platform
One of the biggest changes could be underneath the SUV. The 2027 Nexon is expected to move to Tata's ATLAS (Adaptive Tech-Forward Lifestyle Architecture) platform, which is also used by the Tata Curvv.
The platform has been developed for different vehicle sizes and body styles and can accommodate multiple powertrain technologies. It is also designed with newer electronic architecture and connected technologies in mind.
Moving to this platform could give Tata greater flexibility for future versions of the Nexon.
Major changes to the exterior
The basic upright SUV profile is expected to remain, but the next-generation Nexon could receive a significantly redesigned front and rear.
Expected changes include:
- New grille
- Redesigned headlamps
- New front bumper
- New alloy wheels
- Slightly sloping roofline
- Redesigned LED taillamps
- Updated tailgate
- Revised rear windshield
These changes should give the Nexon a more modern appearance while retaining its recognisable SUV character.
More premium cabin
The interior is also expected to receive a substantial makeover.
The new Nexon could feature a redesigned dashboard, fully digital driver's display, and a larger central touchscreen infotainment system.
The expected feature list could include:
- Panoramic sunroof
- Ventilated front seats
- Automatic climate control
- Rear AC vents
- 360-degree camera
- Level 2 ADAS
If Level 2 ADAS makes it to the production model, the Nexon could offer a significantly more advanced driver-assistance package than the current generation.
Existing engines may continue
Despite the major changes elsewhere, Tata is reportedly expected to retain the existing powertrain options.
The new Nexon could continue with the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol and 1.5-litre turbo-diesel engines, with both manual and automatic transmission options expected.
A CNG version could also continue to be part of the lineup, with reports suggesting an underbody CNG tank. The expected fuel efficiency is around 24 km/kg, although this figure will need to be confirmed officially.
Price could increase
The current Nexon is priced from around ₹7.40 lakh to ₹14.40 lakh (ex-showroom). Since the next-generation model is expected to receive a new platform, updated styling, additional technology, and more features, its price could be somewhat higher.
The final price will only be known when Tata officially launches the SUV.
Tough competition ahead
The next-generation Nexon will continue to compete in India's highly competitive sub-compact SUV segment. Its rivals will include the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Mahindra XUV 3XO, and Skoda Kylaq.
If Tata delivers the expected combination of a new platform, modern design, upgraded cabin, and advanced driver-assistance technology, the 2027 Nexon could become an even stronger contender in the segment.
What can buyers expect?
In short, the 2027 Tata Nexon is expected to focus more on technology and platform modernisation rather than a completely new engine lineup. The exterior and interior could receive significant updates, while Level 2 ADAS and additional premium features may make the SUV more sophisticated.
