The rainy season may bring relief from the heat, but the changing humidity and weather conditions can sometimes leave your skin feeling dry, tight and dull. If your face feels stretched or lacks its usual softness, a few simple skincare habits may help restore moisture and freshness.
Here are five easy remedies that are commonly used to help keep dry skin nourished during the monsoon.
1. Massage Your Face With Almond Oil
Almond oil can be used as a simple moisturising treatment before bedtime. Gently massage a small amount onto your face and leave it on overnight if your skin tolerates it.
Almond oil contains vitamin E and fatty acids that can help soften and moisturise dry skin. However, if you have acne-prone skin, test a small area first to make sure it suits you.
2. Try Aloe Vera for Dry Skin
If your skin feels dry and dull, aloe vera gel can provide a soothing and hydrating effect. Apply a thin layer of plain aloe vera gel to clean skin, preferably at night.
While vitamin E is often used in DIY skincare mixtures, vitamin E capsules are not necessarily suitable for everyone when applied directly to the face. A patch test is advisable before trying any new ingredient.
3. Use a Gentle Moisturising Mixture
Glycerin is a humectant that helps attract moisture to the skin. It can be combined with a suitable moisturising product to help relieve dryness.
Be cautious with lemon juice, however. Applying lemon directly to the skin can cause irritation and may increase sensitivity to sunlight. It is safer to skip lemon in DIY facial treatments, particularly if you have sensitive skin.
4. Milk Cream and Turmeric
Fresh milk cream, also known as malai, has traditionally been used as a moisturising home remedy for dry skin. You can mix a small amount with a pinch of turmeric and apply it briefly before washing it off.
However, turmeric can irritate sensitive skin, and dairy-based mixtures may not suit everyone. Always test a small patch before applying them to your face.
5. Licorice Powder and Yogurt
Licorice, or mulethi, is another ingredient commonly found in traditional skincare remedies. A small amount of licorice powder can be mixed with plain yogurt and used occasionally as a face mask.
Avoid vigorous scrubbing, as this can worsen irritation and dryness. Wash the mixture off gently and follow with a moisturiser.
Keep Your Skincare Routine Simple
During the rainy season, skin can become unpredictable. Instead of trying several remedies at once, introduce one new ingredient at a time and stop using it if you experience burning, redness or irritation.
For persistent dryness, a gentle cleanser, fragrance-free moisturiser and sunscreen are generally more reliable choices than experimenting with multiple DIY ingredients. If dryness, itching or irritation continues, consider consulting a dermatologist.
