Mobile SIM cards are easily available in India, which has increased the risk of misuse. However, now there is news that the rules for purchasing SIM cards in India will change.
The Ministry of Telecommunications has directed all telecom companies to issue SIM cards to minors only after obtaining the consent of their parents or legal guardians. Therefore, children under the age of 18 will not be able to obtain SIM cards.
This new decision is being taken under the Digital Data Protection Act. This act contains several important regulations to protect citizens' data and safeguard their digital identities. Various ministries are now implementing these regulations within their respective departments.
In cases falling under the Ministry of Telecom, KYC and parental consent will be made mandatory for issuing SIM cards in the name of minors.
The government recognizes that SIM cards are more than just a means of making calls these days. Many services, such as banking, OTP verification, online KYC, and digital accounts, are linked to mobile numbers. Therefore, regulations are being tightened.
Once the new rules come into effect, a robust digital tracking system will be used in the SIM card issuance process. It's stated that if a minor applies for a SIM card, a digital record of their parent's or guardian's consent will be maintained.
