Safdarjung Hospital Makes Medical History With First Dual Kidney Transplant From One Donor

In a significant medical achievement, doctors at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi have successfully performed the hospital's first dual kidney transplant, giving a new lease of life to a patient suffering from serious kidney-related problems.

In this rare procedure, both kidneys from the same 62-year-old donor were transplanted into a single recipient. The surgery marks an important milestone for the hospital and could open new possibilities for patients waiting for kidney transplants.

Two kidneys from one donor transplanted into one patient

The donor, a 62-year-old man, was declared brain dead at Command Hospital, Chandi Mandir, on the night of September 19.

After the declaration, the donor's family made the decision to donate his organs. His liver and kidneys were subsequently made available for transplantation.

Because of the donor's age and certain medical considerations, he was considered a marginal donor. In such cases, doctors may determine that using a single kidney may not provide sufficient function for a recipient.

The transplant team therefore decided to use both kidneys from the same donor for one patient.

Air Force helped transport the organs to Delhi

Time is extremely important when organs are being transported for transplantation. The organs therefore had to be moved quickly from the donor hospital to Delhi.

The Indian Air Force's Western Command assisted in transporting the organs.

The donor's liver was allocated to Army Hospital in New Delhi, while both kidneys were transported to Safdarjung Hospital for transplantation.

A complex surgery involving multiple specialists

The rare procedure was carried out by a multidisciplinary medical team led by Dr Pawan Vasudeva.

Dr Neeraj Kumar, Dr Sandeep Kumar and Dr Gaurav Vashisht were also part of the team involved in the transplant.

The successful completion of the procedure represents an important achievement for the hospital's transplant programme.

Why is a dual kidney transplant significant?

Normally, a kidney transplant involves placing one healthy donor kidney into a recipient.

However, in selected cases involving marginal or older donors, doctors may consider transplanting both kidneys into the same patient. Using both organs can potentially provide adequate overall kidney function when either kidney alone may not be considered sufficient.

This approach could become particularly valuable at a time when the demand for donor organs remains significantly higher than their availability.

Organ donation can give others a second chance

The procedure also highlights the importance of organ donation.

The decision of the 62-year-old donor's family allowed multiple organs to be used to help patients in need. While the liver went to another recipient, both kidneys helped a single patient receive a potentially life-changing transplant.

Safdarjung Hospital's first dual kidney transplant could encourage doctors to explore similar approaches in carefully selected cases in the future.

For patients waiting for kidney transplants, every additional opportunity to use a suitable donated organ can make a significant difference.
