India’s upcoming Test against Afghanistan is set to be a special occasion for wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant. The match, beginning on June 6, will mark the 50th Test appearance of Pant’s career, a significant milestone for a player who has already established himself as one of the most impactful performers in red-ball cricket.
What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that Pant has already built an impressive legacy before reaching the 50-Test mark. Since making his debut in 2018, the left-hander has consistently delivered match-winning performances and emerged as one of India's most reliable players in challenging situations.
Pant Has Dominated Indian Batting Since 2018
Rishabh Pant made his Test debut for India in August 2018 and has been one of the country's standout performers ever since. In fact, among all Indian batters, Pant has scored the most Test runs during this period.
Across 49 Tests and 86 innings, Pant has accumulated 3,476 runs, placing him ahead of several established stars. Surprisingly, even former India captain Virat Kohli trails Pant in terms of Test runs scored since Pant's debut. During the same period, Kohli has scored 3,436 runs in 55 Tests and 94 innings.
The numbers highlight Pant’s consistency and ability to contribute significantly despite batting in a middle-order role. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja occupies third place among Indian run-scorers during this period, with 2,899 runs from 53 Tests.
A Specialist in Rescuing India From Trouble
While statistics tell one story, Pant’s real value lies in his ability to perform under pressure.
Ahead of the Afghanistan Test, India head coach Gautam Gambhir emphasized the importance of adapting to match situations. Interestingly, Pant’s record suggests that handling difficult circumstances has become one of his greatest strengths.
Since the start of 2021, there have been 13 occasions when India found themselves in trouble after losing two wickets for fewer than 100 runs. In those challenging situations, Pant has averaged an outstanding 61.1.
Even more impressively, he has contributed over 30 percent of the team's total runs in those innings. Such performances underline his reputation as a game-changer who can alter the course of a match with aggressive yet effective batting.
Closing in on Cricket’s Greatest Wicketkeeper-Batters
Pant’s achievements are not limited to Indian cricket. He is steadily climbing the list of the most successful wicketkeeper-batters in Test history.
Batting in the top six positions, Pant has scored 2,745 runs in just 64 innings across 39 Tests. This places him fourth on the all-time list among wicketkeepers batting in the top order.
Only three legendary names currently stand ahead of him:
-
Kumar Sangakkara – 3,092 runs
-
Alec Stewart – 4,116 runs
-
Andy Flower – 4,256 runs
Given his age and current form, Pant has a realistic opportunity to surpass Sangakkara and move further up the rankings in the coming years.
Dhoni and de Villiers Trail Pant
One of the most striking aspects of Pant’s rise is that he has already moved ahead of several iconic wicketkeeper-batters.
Former India captain MS Dhoni, widely regarded as one of the greatest wicketkeepers in cricket history, scored 1,377 runs while batting in the top six in Test cricket. Pant has comfortably surpassed that figure.
Similarly, South African legend AB de Villiers, who also kept wickets during parts of his Test career, accumulated 1,970 runs in the same category. Pant's tally of 2,745 runs places him well ahead of both modern-day greats.
A Perfect Stage for Another Special Performance
As Pant prepares to play his landmark 50th Test match, expectations will naturally be high. The Afghanistan Test offers him another opportunity to showcase the fearless batting style that has become his trademark.
Whether it is rescuing India from difficult situations, scoring crucial runs overseas, or rewriting records for wicketkeeper-batters, Pant has repeatedly proven his worth. His milestone Test is not just a celebration of longevity but also a reminder of the enormous impact he has made in a relatively short career.
All eyes will now be on the dynamic wicketkeeper-batter as he looks to add another memorable chapter to an already remarkable Test journey.
