Shubman Gill: In the Colombo Test, Shubman Gill broke Virat Kohli's major record. He has now become the captain with the most runs.
India's Test captain Shubman Gill has surpassed Virat Kohli as the leading run-scorer . Team India is playing the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo. India won the toss and elected to bat in the match, which began on Sunday (August 23). Coming in at number four, Gill smashed a half-century, studded with six fours. With this, he became the leading run-scorer for an Indian captain in a single World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
King Kohli scored 934 runs as India's captain in the 2019-21 WTC cycle, taking 34 innings. Gill has surpassed the 1,000-run mark in the current 2025-27 cycle. It's worth noting that Gill reached this milestone in just 17 innings. Gill has now become India's highest run-scorer as a captain in a single cycle.
Gill's bat is speaking loudly in Tests
Excluding the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, Gill has been consistently scoring runs across formats. Prior to that, Gill scored a brilliant 126 in the only Test against Afghanistan, although this match was not part of the WTC cycle. Prior to that, Gill scored an unbeaten 129 against the West Indies. Thus, he has been consistently producing runs.
India dominate on Day 1 of Colombo Test
Looking at the Colombo Test, Team India dominated the first day. By the end of the day, India had posted 300 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in 85 overs. Devdutt Padikkal played a brilliant innings of 117 runs, studded with 12 fours. Dhruv Jurel (07) and Saransh Jain (04) remained unbeaten at the end of the day. Other teams will look to increase this total. It will be interesting to see India's score in the first innings.
