Camphor is commonly seen in Indian households, especially during religious rituals, where it is believed to remove negativity when burned. However, camphor is not limited to worship alone. For centuries, it has also been valued for its medicinal, antibacterial, and insect-repelling properties. From relieving colds and respiratory discomfort to improving skin health and purifying the air, camphor can be useful in many everyday ways—if used correctly.
Camphor is naturally obtained from the wood and bark of the camphor tree through a process called steam distillation. The bark is dried, crushed, and heated with steam, which later cools to form camphor crystals. Pure camphor is rich in beneficial compounds that make it effective for both health and household use.
Camphor for Skin Care
Camphor can help reduce skin blemishes, itching, and fungal infections like ringworm. To relieve itching, mix a small amount of camphor with coconut oil and apply it to the affected area.
For facial use, camphor can be mixed with sandalwood powder and applied briefly. Avoid direct sunlight or heat after application and wash your face thoroughly after 10 minutes to prevent irritation.
Keeps Insects Away
Camphor is a natural insect repellent. If you notice cockroaches or insects in kitchen cabinets or cupboards, wrap a small piece of camphor in a cotton or muslin cloth and place it in those areas. This helps eliminate unpleasant odors and keeps insects at bay.
Helps Remove Bacteria from the Air
Burning camphor along with a little ghee, cloves, cinnamon, and dry incense in the morning or evening can help purify indoor air. This practice not only spreads a pleasant fragrance but may also help reduce airborne bacteria while creating a calming environment at home.
Provides Relief from Cold and Congestion
Camphor is widely used to ease cold-related symptoms. It helps reduce inflammation, clear nasal congestion, and soothe coughs. You can add a small piece of camphor to hot water and inhale the steam. Another effective method is to crush camphor, tie it in a cloth along with lightly roasted carom seeds (ajwain), warm it slightly, and inhale the aroma for relief.
Used wisely, camphor can be a simple yet powerful addition to your daily routine—offering natural relief from common problems while keeping your home fresh and protected.
