Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, launched a strong criticism against the Modi government during his visit to Colombia. Speaking at an event at EIA University, he stated that the biggest threat to India today is the ongoing "attack on democracy."
Gandhi highlighted India’s cultural diversity, including its many religions, languages, and traditions, and emphasized that a democratic system is essential for providing space to all these different voices. He warned that this pluralistic democratic fabric is currently under severe attack from various quarters.
Addressing India’s global position, Gandhi noted India’s vast potential with its population of 1.4 billion, contrasting India's decentralized, diverse system with China’s highly centralized and authoritarian regime. He firmly said that India cannot adopt China’s authoritarian methods and suppress its people, as India’s democratic structure is fundamentally different and will not accept such oppression.
He also discussed India’s ancient spiritual and ideological traditions and their relevance today. Gandhi expressed optimism about India’s future but cautioned about internal risks, particularly the ongoing democratic erosion and rising tensions between diverse communities.
On international politics, Gandhi remarked that India's location between China and the United States places it strategically at a critical geopolitical intersection.
Rahul Gandhi’s remarks mark yet another critical voice against the current government’s policies concerning governance and democracy, reigniting debates on the state of Indian democracy.
