Boxer Prichard Colon dead at 33: Former Puerto Rican boxer Prichard Colon has died at the age of 33. He had been battling health issues for a long time since suffering serious injuries during a controversial fight in October 2015. Colon's father, Richard Colon, shared the sad news of his son's passing in an emotional post on social media on Thursday. He wrote that he was trying his best to fulfill his son's last wish, but it was impossible. He thanked fans for the love and prayers the family had received over the years.
The controversial bout and tragic accident of 2015
Pritchard Colon had a stellar boxing career. Before taking on Terrell Williams in October 2015, he had won 16 consecutive bouts, 13 of which were by knockout. However, his bout against Terrell Williams turned into a nightmare. Colon was punched multiple times in the back of the head. Colon complained to the referee, but the match continued. Colon fell down in the 9th round. His corner then mistakenly removed his gloves, resulting in a disqualification.
Pritchard went into a coma after surgery
Colon's health deteriorated rapidly upon returning to the dressing room. He began vomiting and collapsed. He was immediately rushed to the hospital, where doctors confirmed bleeding in his brain. He underwent surgery to reduce brain swelling and pressure, after which he remained in a coma for 221 days.
Even after emerging from a coma, he was unable to fully recover from severe brain damage, leaving him in a vegetative state. He was speechless and relied on a computer to communicate. Pritchard Colon lived in Florida, cared for by his mother and family for 11 years, before passing away at the age of 33. The World Boxing Organization (WBO) wrote on its X account, "A warrior to the last. The WBO family mourns the passing of Pritchard Colon, whose courage, strength, and fighting spirit transcended the ring. His greatest fight became a testament to his perseverance and the unwavering love of his family."
