Amid the glitz and glamour of the festive season, cyber-criminals have found new ways to prey on people. These days, fake SMS messages and WhatsApp links are being sent in the name of festive offers, free gifts, and huge discounts.
How does this fraud happen?
Tempting offers: You receive a message claiming you've won an expensive gift or a huge discount of up to 80% in a lucky draw.
Fake APK file or link: Clicking on the link provided in the message downloads an APK file or opens a fake website that looks exactly like an e-commerce website.
Data theft and empty bank account: As soon as you share your information or make a small payment, fraudsters gain remote access to your phone and empty your bank account in a jiffy.
Essential tech tips for protection:
Do not click on unknown links: Do not click on any festive offer or parcel delivery link received from any unknown number.
Avoid downloading APK files: Do not install any unwanted APK files that you receive on WhatsApp or Telegram.
Use official apps: Always shop from the official websites of companies or verified apps (like Amazon, Flipkart etc.).
Never share OTP or UPI PIN: Never share your OTP, UPI PIN or password with anyone.
Be alert, be safe! If you are subjected to any kind of online fraud, immediately report it on the official Cyber Crime website cybercrime.gov.in or call the helpline number 1930.
