A major update has surfaced from one of Indian cinema’s most ambitious projects. Renowned filmmaker S. S. Rajamouli is currently working on his mega-budget film Varanasi, reportedly made on a massive budget of ₹1300 crore. The film already boasts a stellar cast, and now actor Prakash Raj has revealed details about his crucial role in the movie.
Prakash Raj Confirms His Character
During a recent event, Prakash Raj confirmed that he will be playing a devout follower of Lord Shiva in Varanasi. Putting an end to speculation, the actor clarified that he is not playing Mahesh Babu’s father, as earlier rumored.
“I’m working in Rajamouli’s Varanasi, and I play a great devotee of Lord Shiva,” Prakash Raj revealed.
Initially, reports suggested that Bollywood actor Rajat Kapoor was considered for this role, but due to creative differences, the makers eventually finalized Prakash Raj.
Star-Studded Cast of ‘Varanasi’
The film features Mahesh Babu in the lead role, marking his first collaboration with SS Rajamouli. Global star Priyanka Chopra will be seen alongside him in a powerful role, reportedly portraying a dacoit. Malayalam superstar Prithviraj Sukumaran has been cast as the main antagonist, and he has hinted that his character will explore darker, layered traits.
Rajamouli has already confirmed that Varanasi will be a single-part film, unlike his previous franchises.
Shooting Update
According to SS Rajamouli, nearly 50% of the film’s shooting has been completed, and the team aims to wrap up production before August 2026.
Prakash Raj’s Upcoming Projects
Apart from Varanasi, Prakash Raj will also be seen in Prabhas’ upcoming film Spirit and the much-awaited Drishyam 3. Notably, Prakash Raj earlier clashed on-screen with Salman Khan in the blockbuster film Dabangg 2, where he played the antagonist.
