PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana: What Is the Free Rooftop Solar Scheme and How Can You Get Solar Panels Installed?

The Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is one of the Government of India’s most ambitious schemes aimed at reducing electricity costs for households and promoting renewable energy. Launched in February 2024, the scheme focuses on providing free or highly subsidised rooftop solar systems to residential consumers across the country.

According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), the scheme has already benefited over 2.6 million families, and its popularity continues to grow as more households switch to solar power.

Millions of Homes Powered by Solar Energy

So far, more than 2 million rooftop solar systems have been installed under this scheme. These systems are helping families significantly cut down their electricity bills while meeting daily power needs through clean energy.

By December 2025, the central government had distributed subsidies worth thousands of crores of rupees, making solar installation affordable for middle- and low-income households.

States Benefiting the Most

Among all states, Gujarat has emerged as the biggest beneficiary, with millions of homes installing rooftop solar systems. Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh follow closely, reflecting the increasing acceptance of solar energy across different regions of the country.

Subsidy and Power Generation Details

Under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana:

  • Consumers can get a maximum subsidy of up to ₹85,800

  • Even a 1 kW solar system can generate around 100 units of electricity per month

  • This is usually sufficient to cover the monthly electricity needs of an average household

Energy experts believe that if 1 crore homes adopt rooftop solar under this scheme, India will see a massive boost in renewable energy generation and a sharp decline in carbon emissions in the coming years.

Environmental and Financial Benefits

Apart from lowering electricity bills, the scheme contributes to:

  • Reduced dependence on conventional power sources

  • Significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions

  • Long-term savings for households

  • A cleaner and more sustainable energy ecosystem
