Persistent Cough Triggered by Pollution? Simple Ayurvedic Remedies That Can Help

With pollution levels rising across many parts of the country, a persistent cough has become one of the most common health complaints. Fine particulate matter in polluted air irritates the throat and lungs, causing dryness, mucus buildup, and continuous coughing. Children, senior citizens, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory problems are especially vulnerable, making it essential to take these symptoms seriously.

Early signs of a pollution-related cough include constant throat irritation, dry or phlegm-filled coughing, chest discomfort, nasal congestion, and difficulty breathing. Many people experience the worst coughing spells after waking up, as polluted particles tend to settle in the respiratory tract overnight. If this condition is ignored for too long, it can lead to complications such as bronchitis, asthma, lung infections, and inflammation of the airways. Persistent coughing also affects daily life, sleep quality, and appetite. This makes early recognition and timely care crucial.

Ayurvedic remedies to ease pollution-related cough
Dr. R. P. Parashar, an Ayurveda expert with the Delhi government, says that according to Ayurvedic principles, cleansing and supporting the respiratory and immune systems is key to managing pollution-induced cough. Drinking lukewarm water mixed with a pinch of turmeric in the morning can be helpful, as curcumin reduces inflammation and protects against infection.

Herbal options such as tulsi water, basil-ginger decoctions, and licorice tea help soothe the throat and reduce coughing. Steam inhalation is another effective method, as it loosens mucus and eases breathing. Traditional Ayurvedic supplements like Chyawanprash, Sitopaladi churna, and licorice powder are known to strengthen immunity. A small amount of turmeric mixed with ghee can also relieve throat dryness and irritation.
