Pakistan is sweating due to the action taken by India after the Pahalgam terror attack. Pakistan is yearning for every drop of water due to the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty by India. Pakistan, which was trying to attack India in response to Operation Sindoor, is now completely on its knees. That is why it is constantly pleading before India to restore the Indus Water Treaty. It is being told that Pakistan has written letters to India about four times, requesting to restart the Indus Water Treaty.
Media reports have said that Pakistan's Water Resources Secretary Syed Ali Murtaza has sent a total of four letters to India's Jal Shakti Ministry, requesting to review the decision to suspend the treaty. It is being told that three letters were written after Operation Sindoor. On one hand, Pakistan is demanding the restoration of the treaty, while on the other hand, it is saying that the suspension of the water treaty is a violation of the agreement. However, there has been no response from India regarding the letters.
India suspended the Indus Water Treaty after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam.
After the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on 22 April 2025, the Government of India announced the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty (1960) with immediate effect on 23 April. This step was taken in response to Pakistan's support of cross-border terrorism. Despite four wars between the two countries and decades of cross-border terrorism, this treaty was maintained. 70 percent of Pakistan's agriculture depends on the water of the Indus River. Drinking water is also supplied to many cities from this river.
Postponement of the agreement continues even after the ceasefire.
After the four-day conflict between India and Pakistan, it came to an end on 10 May. After Pakistan surrendered, India announced a ceasefire from 5 pm on the 10th. Then the Ministry of External Affairs said that India had agreed to the ceasefire on its terms. The suspension of the Indus Water Treaty will continue amid the ceasefire.
Indus Water Treaty
The Indus Water Treaty is a water-sharing agreement signed between India and Pakistan in 1960. It was mediated by the World Bank. The purpose of this agreement was to prevent disputes between the two countries over the use of water from the Indus River and its tributaries. Under this treaty, the six rivers of the Indus River Basin of the Himalayas have been divided into two parts. India gets the water from the eastern rivers Beas, Ravi, and Sutlej while Pakistan got control of the western rivers Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab. Under the agreement, India got the right to about 30 percent of the water and Pakistan got 70 percent of the water. It is written in this agreement that India will have to let the water of Jhelum, Chenab, and Indus rivers go to Pakistan.
