India's digital payment system, UPI, is now gaining popularity worldwide. NPCI has launched the UPI One World Wallet service for guests from over 40 countries attending the India AI Impact Summit 2026, being held at Bharat Mandapam in Delhi. Foreign tourists and delegates will no longer need an Indian mobile number or local bank account to make payments in India.
What is 'UPI One World' and how does it work?
This is a prepaid payment instrument (PPI) wallet specifically designed for foreign travelers. Foreign guests can register using their country's passport and visa. They no longer need to rely on large amounts of cash or forex cards. They can top up their wallet directly using their currency or card. Through this wallet, they can make payments to any merchant in India by scanning a QR code.
How will guests use this service?
NPCI has made this service very easy. It is available at Hall No. 14 of New Delhi International Airport and the NPCI Pavilion at the Summit Venue (Bharat Mandapam). Guests need to download the CheqUPI app, enter their basic details, and set their UPI PIN along with selfie verification. They can load up to ₹25,000 at a time, with a monthly limit of ₹50,000. The best part is that if there is any balance left in the wallet at the end of the trip, it can be transferred back to their original payment source (foreign account).
Why is this initiative special?
According to Sohini Rajola, NPCI's Executive Director of Growth, the service allows foreign tourists to experience India's made-in-India digital public infrastructure (DPI). This not only promotes global connectivity but also demonstrates how easy cross-border payments could become in the future.
