No More Weevils in Wheat: Just Add These 2 Simple Things for Long-Term Storage

Storing wheat in large quantities is common in many homes, especially in rural areas where grains are kept for months or even a year. But improper storage can quickly lead to weevil infestation—tiny pests that grow inside the grains and slowly hollow them out from within. If not controlled in time, they can ruin the entire stock.

The good news is that preventing this problem is quite simple. By using two natural ingredients—neem leaves and slaked lime—you can protect your wheat effectively without relying on chemicals.

Neem leaves are known for their strong smell and natural antibacterial and insect-repelling properties. When dried properly and placed with stored wheat, they act as a natural deterrent, keeping pests away. Slaked lime, on the other hand, helps by absorbing moisture. Since moisture is one of the main reasons weevils develop, lime creates a dry environment that prevents infestation and also forms a protective barrier due to its alkaline nature.

When storing wheat in sacks, it’s best to first line the sack with a plastic sheet to block moisture. Start by placing a layer of dried neem leaves at the bottom, then add wheat. Place small cloth pouches filled with slaked lime in between layers of wheat, and finally add another layer of neem leaves on top before sealing the sack.

If you’re using containers, follow a similar layering method—neem leaves at the base, then wheat, then lime, and again neem leaves on top. For larger containers, you can repeat these layers depending on the quantity.

One important thing to remember is that the wheat must be completely dry before storage. It’s a good idea to sun-dry it for a day or two before storing. Also, ensure that the storage area, sack, or container is completely free from moisture.
