Business Desk: Digital payments in India are set to become easier and more secure starting October 8, 2025. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has announced that users will now be able to approve UPI transactions using face recognition and fingerprints.
Now payment is not just through PIN, but also through biometrics.
This new feature eliminates the need to enter a PIN. Biometric data will be securely linked to the Aadhaar system. Users will be able to make fast and secure payments simply by entering their identity information into their phones.
RBI gave guidance
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) recently allowed alternative authentication. NPCI is working to make transactions faster, safer, and fraud-free through this new technology.
Experts say
- Biometric authentication will reduce incidents of PIN theft and fraud.
- This feature will be beneficial for the elderly and those in rural areas who find it difficult to remember the PIN.
Data security
NPCI clarified that biometric data will remain encrypted only on the phone; neither the bank nor NPCI will store or access it. Users can turn this feature on or off at any time.
