Ahead of the NEET Re-Exam 2026 scheduled for June 21, the government has temporarily blocked the messaging platform Telegram in India until June 22. The action was taken by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology under Section 69A of the IT Act, following recommendations from the National Testing Agency (NTA). The decision has sparked widespread discussion over why only Telegram was restricted while WhatsApp continues to operate normally.
According to official inputs and reports, the restriction on Telegram is linked to its alleged use in a suspected paper leak and fraud network targeting NEET aspirants. Investigators pointed to specific features of Telegram that were reportedly misused to circulate misleading or manipulated content during the examination cycle.
One of the key concerns highlighted is Telegram’s message editing feature, which allows users to modify previously sent messages while retaining the original timestamp and marking them as “edited.” Authorities believe this functionality was allegedly exploited by fraudsters to create misleading evidence of paper leaks by altering messages after the fact while maintaining a seemingly credible timeline.
In addition, Telegram’s large public channels and broadcast groups were reportedly used to spread information rapidly to a wide audience. Unlike closed communication systems, these channels can reach thousands or even millions of users at once, making them more vulnerable to large-scale misinformation campaigns if misused.
In contrast, WhatsApp is primarily structured around private conversations linked to phone numbers and offers limited large-scale public broadcasting capabilities. Officials have not accused WhatsApp of involvement in the ongoing investigation, and its ecosystem is considered more restricted in terms of mass public dissemination compared to Telegram.
Authorities also noted that while misinformation can spread on WhatsApp, it does not provide the same combination of editable public posts and large broadcast channels that are central to the allegations surrounding Telegram. As a result, the action has been focused specifically on Telegram based on its reported role in the investigation.
The temporary block is expected to remain in place until June 22, after the exam concludes, as part of precautionary measures to prevent further misuse during the examination period.
