Need money for a wedding? How much can you withdraw from your PF? Learn the rules

Many people get married in June and July, and the wedding date is finalized by December. This creates a rush to arrange the money. Because weddings involve spending like water, there's no waiting around to ensure there's no shortage. Often, if the wedding exceeds the budget, people rush to withdraw money from their PF accounts. If you need money for your own wedding or a family wedding, you can withdraw it from your PF account. Let's explore how much money can be withdrawn from a PF account and how…

Rules for Withdrawal for Marriage
According to EPFO rules, any employee can withdraw a certain amount from their PF account for their own marriage, their son's or daughter's marriage, or their brother's or sister's marriage. However, rules have been made for this. Withdrawals can be made under those rules. Most importantly, the employee's EPF membership must be at least seven years old. If you have contributed to PF for seven years or more, you are eligible to withdraw money from your account.

How much amount can I withdraw?

For marriage, an employee can withdraw a maximum of 50% of their contribution and interest earned from their PF account. For example, if the employee's contribution and interest earned totals ₹8 lakh, the maximum withdrawal allowed is ₹4 lakh. Keep in mind that this amount will be based only on the employee's contribution and interest. This means you cannot withdraw money from the company's contribution. The EPFO allows you to withdraw money from your account for marriage or education up to three times.

How to apply online?

The EPFO process is online. You can apply for an advance payment by logging into the EPFO's Unified Member Portal and filling out Form 31. Linking your Aadhaar, PAN, and bank account with your PF account is required. Once your application is accepted, the amount is directly deposited into your bank account. In fact, a PF advance is a better option than a personal loan because the money in the account is yours and you don't have to pay any interest on it.
