Access to the internet has become essential for students, job seekers, travellers and small business owners. Whether it is attending an online class, downloading an important document or completing a digital payment, reliable connectivity matters. To expand affordable internet access, the Government of India is promoting the PM-WANI (Prime Minister’s Wi-Fi Access Network Interface) scheme.
The initiative has gained fresh attention following government updates on public Wi-Fi access and improvements introduced to make connections easier for users. The scheme also creates opportunities for local shopkeepers and entrepreneurs to operate public Wi-Fi hotspots.
What Is the PM-WANI Scheme?
Approved in December 2020, PM-WANI aims to expand public broadband access through Wi-Fi hotspots across India. Instead of relying only on large telecom companies to provide connectivity, the framework allows local businesses and public data offices to participate in delivering internet services.
The government reported that more than 4.09 lakh public Wi-Fi hotspots were operational under the framework as of 28 February 2026. This network is intended to improve access in locations where affordable, reliable internet connectivity is important.
What New Features Make Public Wi-Fi Easier to Use?
In May 2026, the Department of Telecommunications announced user-friendly changes to the PM-WANI framework.
Key improvements include:
-
Short-duration internet plans: Operators have been advised to offer plans lasting 15, 30 and 60 minutes, useful for people who need connectivity for a short period.
-
QR-based laptop connectivity: Users can authenticate through a supported mobile application and scan a QR code to connect secondary devices such as laptops.
-
Standardised hotspot names: PM-WANI branding is intended to make participating Wi-Fi networks easier to identify.
These changes are designed to simplify access and give users more flexible options when they need internet connectivity outside their homes.
How Can You Connect to a PM-WANI Hotspot?
The exact process can vary depending on the service provider and application. In general, users should:
-
Look for a participating PM-WANI Wi-Fi hotspot at a public location or participating establishment.
-
Use a compatible PM-WANI application or the connection method supported by the hotspot.
-
Complete the required authentication process.
-
Select an available data plan, if the service is paid.
-
Connect to the network after completing the payment or access requirements.
Users should check the price and validity of a plan before purchasing it. Public Wi-Fi access should not automatically be assumed to be free.
Can Small Shopkeepers Start a Public Wi-Fi Business?
PM-WANI also provides an opportunity for local entrepreneurs to participate in the public internet ecosystem. A shopkeeper, café owner or other eligible establishment may explore becoming a Public Data Office (PDO) by arranging a suitable broadband connection and compatible Wi-Fi equipment.
The framework is intended to reduce entry barriers for small operators. However, entrepreneurs should review the technical requirements, equipment expenses, internet-provider terms and expected customer demand before investing.
Is Public Wi-Fi Safe for Online Payments?
Public Wi-Fi can be convenient, but users should follow basic digital safety practices:
-
Connect only to a network whose identity you can verify.
-
Avoid entering banking passwords or other sensitive information on unfamiliar networks.
-
Use official applications and websites, and check that the connection is secure.
-
Never share an OTP or UPI PIN with anyone claiming to provide Wi-Fi access.
-
Disconnect from the network when you have finished using it.
A familiar network name alone does not guarantee that a hotspot is genuine or secure.
Where Can You Find More Information?
For official information about the scheme and its latest guidelines, visit the Department of Telecommunications website at dot.gov.in or check announcements published by the Press Information Bureau at pib.gov.in.
PM-WANI is intended to make public internet access more accessible while creating opportunities for local businesses. For consumers, the most useful takeaway is to check for participating hotspots, compare available plans and use public networks responsibly.
