You may have noticed that when you go to the market to buy something, the shopkeeper often tries to charge you more than the MRP printed on the product. Many people pay the extra amount to avoid a dispute, while others start arguing right there at the shop. But do you have legal rights?
The Indian government has established
the National Consumer Helpline to protect consumer interests. This is where complaints can be lodged regarding overcharging, incorrect billing, or defective products or services. What can you do about it?
Always ask for a bill first
If a shopkeeper charges you more than the MRP for a packaged item, be sure to ask for a bill or cash memo first. Many people, assuming the amount is small, pay without a bill, but later have no proof to file a complaint.
Check the MRP
Before making a purchase, carefully read the maximum retail price printed on the product package. Many customers, in a hurry, pay without checking the price. If there is a discrepancy between the billed price and the MRP printed on the package, note it immediately.
Complain to the Consumer Helpline
If a shopkeeper doesn't listen to you and charges more than the MRP, you can file a complaint with the National Consumer Helpline. Complaints can be made through the online portal, mobile app, or helpline number. When filing a complaint, upload the bill, a photo of the product, and all evidence related to the overcharge. If you prefer to call, the number 1800-11-4000 / 14404 is completely toll-free.
