Mobile New Rules: Will the names of unknown callers be visible on mobile phones from November 1st? What are the CNAP rules?

An important update has arrived for mobile users. Now, when you receive a call from an unknown number, you no longer need to rely on apps like Truecaller to find out who's calling. You can easily see the name of the person associated with your mobile number. This is because the Central  Government 's Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has taken steps to implement the Caller Name Presentation (CNAP) feature. With this feature, the caller's name will appear directly on the mobile screen. However, claims that this feature will be made mandatory for everyone from November 1, 2026, need to be verified through an official notification.

What is the CNAP rule?

CNAP stands for Caller Name Presentation. When you receive a call on your mobile, the caller's name will appear on the screen. This name will be based on the customer's registration details available with the respective telecom company. Therefore, even if the phone number isn't saved in your contacts list, it can help you identify whose calling.

Can you guess the caller's name without Truecaller?

Currently, many mobile users use apps like Truecaller to identify unknown numbers. However, the CNAP feature will work through the telecom network, reducing the need for separate caller ID apps. Identifying important calls will also become easier if the caller's name appears on the screen.

Will cyber-fraud be curbed?
Helping to identify an unknown caller can make it easier to identify some types of fraud. However, don't assume a call is safe just because you see a name. Fraudsters can use other people's identities. Therefore, don't share OTPs, bank details, or personal information with anyone.

Will international calls also be recognized?
A different signal or identification may be displayed for international calls. The availability and functionality of CNAP may vary depending on the mobile network, device, and applicable regulations. Therefore, it is important to check the official announcement from the Department of Telecommunications regarding whether this feature will be available on all mobile phones from November 1st.
