With online fraud on the rise, Meta has introduced enhanced safety tools across its platforms—WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger—to protect users, especially the elderly. This move strengthens ongoing efforts to promote digital literacy and safeguard users from scams.
Key Safety Features
-
WhatsApp Alerts: Users attempting to share their screen with unknown contacts during video calls will now receive warnings. Scammers often exploit screen sharing to steal sensitive information such as bank details and verification codes.
-
Messenger Scam Detection: AI-powered scam detection has been rolled out in Messenger. Users receiving suspicious messages from new contacts will be alerted and can opt for an AI review. If a potential scam is detected, users are notified and given the option to block or report the account.
-
Secure Logins: Meta now supports Passkey login on Facebook, Messenger, and WhatsApp, allowing users to sign in securely using a fingerprint, face, or PIN. Users can also perform security checkups on Facebook and Instagram to review settings and enhance account security.
Focus on Senior Citizens
Through the Scam Se Bacho campaign, Meta is working with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to educate older users about online scams. The campaign includes multilingual video content to help seniors identify and report fraudulent activity.
Meta’s initiatives reflect the company’s commitment to keeping users safe while navigating digital platforms, particularly vulnerable age groups, in an increasingly online world.
