There is a possibility of a major reduction in the weight of your domestic LPG cylinder in the coming days. The increasing tension between Iran and the US has disrupted the global supply chain. It is being said that this will have a direct impact on India's domestic gas supply. In view of the decline in domestic LPG stocks, oil marketing companies are now preparing to take a big decision. According to a report in 'The Economic Times', it is being said that in the coming days, only 10 kg gas will be supplied to consumers instead of 14.2 kg cylinder.
Ships stranded in the Strait of Hormuz
India imports approximately 60% of its total LPG needs. 90% of this import comes from Gulf countries. However, due to the current war-like situation, ships coming from Gulf countries are stranded in the Strait of Hormuz. Last week, only two ships were able to transit the Strait, carrying 92,700 tonnes of gas. This quantity is equivalent to India's consumption for just one day.
According to a report in The Economic Times, this change will be made to ensure that existing stock reaches as many consumers as possible. A 14.2 kg cylinder typically lasts 35-40 days, while a 10 kg supply can last for about 30 days, or a month. This will ensure that gas distribution lasts longer. Additionally, consumers will receive a price discount. Customers will not have to pay for 14.2 kg. The reduced quantity of gas will also result in a corresponding price discount. Special stickers will be placed on the cylinders to clearly indicate that the gas is low, preventing confusion among consumers.
How will this scheme be implemented?
Implementing this scheme is not easy. It requires technical changes at the bottling plant, where cylinders are filled. Furthermore, the necessary regulatory approvals will be required from the government to change the weight. This process may take a few days. However, if the situation worsens, the scheme will be implemented on a war footing. Commercial gas supply was initially completely cut off, but now it has been restored to 40% capacity. However, 86% of the country's total gas is used for domestic purposes. Gas consumption decreased by 17% in the first two weeks of March.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has warned of targeting Iran's energy infrastructure. Currently, six Indian LPG tankers are stranded in the Persian Gulf. India's gas reserves are not expected to increase until the Strait of Hormuz is secured. Therefore, consumers are repeatedly advised to limit their gas consumption.
