Drinking lemon water has long been considered a healthy way to start the day. Rich in vitamin C, lemon supports immunity, digestion, and skin health. When combined with honey, its benefits may increase further. In recent years, drinking lukewarm lemon–honey water on an empty stomach has become a popular morning ritual, often recommended by fitness enthusiasts, dietitians, and wellness experts.
But what actually happens to the body if you drink lemon–honey water every day for weeks or even a month? Experts explain its benefits, preparation method, and who should avoid it.
What Does the Expert Say?
According to Dr. Shefali Bhardwaj, Naturopathy Physician at the Kailash Institute of Naturopathy, Ayurveda & Yoga, warm lemon–honey water helps hydrate the body and activates metabolism, which can help maintain energy levels throughout the day.
She explains that lemon contains citric acid, which stimulates digestive enzymes and improves digestion. Regular consumption may help reduce common digestive issues such as bloating, gas, and a feeling of heaviness after meals.
Helps Flush Out Toxins
Dr. Bhardwaj adds that lemon–honey water may assist the body in flushing out toxins. Vitamin C and citric acid support liver function and help cleanse the digestive system. Honey, which is rich in antioxidants, helps protect the body from free radical damage and supports overall health.
The drink may also help control appetite and reduce cravings, making it useful for those trying to manage their weight.
Who Should Avoid Lemon–Honey Water?
While beneficial for many, this drink is not suitable for everyone. Dr. Bhardwaj advises people with the following conditions to consult a doctor before consuming it regularly:
-
Acidity or gastritis
-
Stomach ulcers
-
Tooth sensitivity or weak enamel
-
Diabetes
Excess lemon intake can damage tooth enamel due to its acidic nature, while honey may raise blood sugar levels if consumed in excess.
How to Prepare and When to Drink It
To prepare the drink:
-
Take one glass of lukewarm water
-
Add the juice of half a lemon
-
Mix in one teaspoon of honey
Experts recommend drinking it on an empty stomach, within 15–20 minutes of waking up, or at least 30 minutes before breakfast. This timing may help boost metabolism and support weight management.
Avoid adding honey to very hot water, as heat can destroy its nutrients. If you feel excess acidity after drinking it, rinse your mouth with plain water.
