“Laugh at Me or Laugh Because of Me”: Rajpal Yadav Speaks Out After Release from Tihar Jail

Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav has been released from Tihar Jail after the Delhi High Court granted him interim bail in a cheque bounce case. The actor walked out of jail on Tuesday, thanking everyone who supported him during what he described as one of the toughest phases of his life. Soon after his release, Rajpal was seen celebrating at his niece’s wedding, dancing joyfully in a video that has since gone viral on social media.

Rajpal Yadav had surrendered on February 5 in connection with the case, following which several celebrities—including Sonu Sood, Gurmeet Choudhary, Mika Singh, and others—extended their support. Speaking to the media after his release, the actor made it clear that he is unaffected by gossip or public judgment surrounding his legal troubles.

In a conversation with Press Trust of India from his ancestral village in Shahjahanpur district, Rajpal reflected on his time in jail and the lessons it taught him. He said he received immense love from people and emphasized that prisons should function as reform centers rather than mere punishment facilities. He also suggested practical changes, such as designated smoking zones inside jails, drawing comparisons to public places like railway stations and airports. According to him, it is often hard to judge from the outside who is a hardened criminal and who has simply made a one-time mistake.

The actor clarified that all legal matters will be addressed by his lawyer, Bhaskar Upadhyay, and added that due to a family wedding, he would not interact with the media for a couple of days. Rajpal also firmly stated that he does not seek sympathy. “I want to increase my income, not change my currency. I don’t need sympathy, I need time,” he said, underlining his commitment to work and self-respect. On public reactions, he remarked candidly, “Laugh at Rajpal Yadav or laugh because of Rajpal Yadav—it doesn’t matter to me.”

Rajpal Yadav is widely loved for his comic performances in films such as Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Phir Hera Pheri, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Hungama, and Chup Chup Ke. In the current case involving an amount of around ₹9 crore, the High Court has suspended his sentence until March 18, allowing him temporary relief and a chance to return to normal life while the legal process continues.
