Digital communication in India is set for a big upgrade. Reliance Jio and Apple have announced the rollout of RCS (Rich Communication Services) messaging on iPhones, bringing a much-needed advanced alternative to regular SMS. With this, iPhone users in India will enjoy smart messaging features that were earlier limited to apps like WhatsApp or iMessage.
What is RCS Messaging?
Think of RCS as SMS 2.0—a next-generation upgrade to traditional text messages. It bridges the gap between standard SMS and modern chat apps by offering:
-
Read Receipts – See when your message has been read.
-
File Sharing – Send photos, videos, and documents directly via messages.
-
Group Chats – Converse with multiple people in one chat, just like WhatsApp.
-
High-Resolution Media Sharing – Share clear, high-quality photos and videos without compression.
Why RCS on iPhones is a Big Deal
Until recently, Apple kept RCS-like features limited to iMessage, meaning advanced messaging worked only between iPhone users. When texting Android phones, iPhone users were restricted to basic SMS (the infamous green bubble).
-
With iOS 18, Apple began supporting RCS globally.
-
Now, the partnership with Jio brings this feature officially to Indian iPhone users.
-
Result: Smooth, feature-rich messaging between iPhone and Android users without the old green-blue bubble divide.
What About Airtel?
While Jio is moving ahead, Airtel has held back on enabling RCS with Apple and Google. The company argues that it could increase spam risks, and wants TRAI to introduce stricter anti-spam regulations before adoption.
End of the Green-Blue Bubble War
For years, iPhone users saw blue bubbles when chatting with other iPhones and green bubbles when texting Androids, often creating a social divide. With RCS, this difference finally disappears—messaging across platforms will look and feel uniform, secure, and modern.
