IPL 2026: BCCI takes action against Abhishek Sharma, deducts match fees; why was the SRH opener punished?

Abhishek Sharma has been fined: Abhishek Sharma has been fined 25 percent of his match fee for violating the IPL Code of Conduct during the KKR vs SRH match.

Abhishek Sharma played an explosive innings of 48 runs against the Kolkata Knight Riders on Thursday . He hit four sixes and as many fours in this 21-ball innings. However, the BCCI took action against him after the match. He was fined 25 percent of his match fee for violating the IPL Code of Conduct during the match. He was also given one demerit point.

While imposing the fine on Abhishek Sharma, BCCI said in an official statement, "Sunrisers Hyderabad all-rounder Abhishek Sharma has been fined 25 per cent of his match fee and also handed one demerit point for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during his team's match against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on Thursday."

Abhishek admitted his mistake. The statement said, "He accepted the Level 1 offence under Article 2.3 and accepted the Match Referee's sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee's decision is final and binding."

There was controversy over the wicket of Abhishek Sharma

Abhishek was caught on the boundary off the fourth ball of the 9th over. However, the decision went to the third umpire because it was unclear whether Varun Chakravarthy had completed the catch. Many fans on social media also believed it was a no-catch, and Abhishek was also unhappy with this.

SRH won by 65 runs

Sunrisers Hyderabad registered their first win of IPL 2026 on Thursday. Batting first at Eden Gardens, the team posted a mammoth 226, before Kolkata Knight Riders were bowled out for 161. Nitish Kumar Reddy was named Player of the Match, scoring a crucial 39 runs off 24 balls and taking two wickets in two overs.
