Instagram Launches ‘Instants’ Feature for Real-Time Photo Sharing Inspired by Snapchat

Popular social media platform Instagram has introduced a brand-new feature called “Instants,” designed to offer users a faster and more private way to share real-life moments with friends. The feature closely resembles the experience offered by Snapchat, focusing on casual, unfiltered, and temporary photo sharing rather than polished public posts.

Instagram says the new feature is aimed at users who prefer authentic conversations and spontaneous content over heavily edited social media uploads. The global rollout of Instants officially began on May 13.

With disappearing photos, private sharing, screenshot protection, and several privacy-focused tools, Instagram is attempting to create a more relaxed and personal communication experience inside the app.

What Is Instagram’s New Instants Feature?

The Instants feature has been integrated directly into Instagram’s DM (Direct Message) section.

Users will see a small photo stack icon inside the chat interface. Tapping this icon opens an instant camera that allows users to capture and share live photos immediately with close friends or mutual followers.

Unlike regular Instagram posts or Stories, Instants are designed to feel raw and natural.

The feature intentionally limits:

  • Heavy editing tools
  • Filters
  • Advanced visual effects
  • Gallery uploads

This means users can only capture and send real-time photos rather than uploading older images from their phone gallery.

Instagram says this approach encourages more genuine and spontaneous interactions between friends.

Photos Automatically Disappear After Viewing

One of the biggest highlights of Instants is its disappearing photo system.

Photos shared through Instants automatically vanish after being viewed, creating a more temporary and private communication experience.

This disappearing-message concept has become increasingly popular among younger users who prefer casual conversations that do not remain permanently visible online.

The feature is designed for:

  • Real-time updates
  • Daily moments
  • Quick reactions
  • Casual interactions
  • Private sharing

rather than highly curated social media content.

Instagram Adds Multiple Privacy and Safety Features

Instagram has also introduced several privacy-focused tools alongside Instants to improve user safety and control.

Archive Feature

One of the most notable additions is the Archive feature.

Although shared photos disappear for recipients, users can privately save their own Instants inside a personal archive for up to one year. Only the original sender can access this archive.

Recap Feature

Instagram is also adding a Recap tool that automatically organizes past Instants into collections.

Users can later convert these collections into Instagram Stories and share selected memories again if they choose.

Undo Button

The new feature also includes an Undo option.

If a user accidentally sends an Instant photo, they can remove it before the recipient opens and views it.

Snooze Option

Instagram has additionally added a Snooze feature for users who temporarily want to pause Instant interactions or notifications.

Extra Safety Measures for Teen Users

Meta says strong privacy and parental safety protections remain active within Instants.

The company confirmed that existing Instagram safety tools such as:

  • Mute
  • Block
  • Restrict

will continue functioning normally inside the feature.

Users will only be able to share Instants with:

  • Close Friends
  • Mutual Followers

to reduce unwanted interactions.

Instagram has also reportedly introduced additional protections against:

  • Screenshots
  • Screen recordings

to improve privacy around disappearing content.

For teenagers, Family Centre protections and Teen Account safety settings will remain enabled automatically.

Additionally, notification muting for teens between 10 PM and 7 AM will continue operating under Instagram’s nighttime safety system.

Meta Also Testing a Separate Instants App

Reports suggest that Meta is currently testing a standalone Instants app in countries like Spain and Italy.

This separate app would reportedly focus entirely on instant camera-based sharing and could offer a more dedicated Snapchat-style experience.

The company has not yet confirmed whether the standalone version will receive a wider global release.

Instagram Responding to Changing Social Media Trends

The launch of Instants reflects a major shift in social media behavior.

Younger audiences are increasingly moving away from highly edited, perfect-looking posts and instead prefer:

  • Authentic content
  • Private interactions
  • Temporary sharing
  • Real-time communication

Platforms across the industry are adapting to this trend by introducing features that prioritize intimacy and casual sharing over public performance.

Industry experts believe Instants could become one of Instagram’s most important social features as competition in private messaging and real-time content sharing continues to grow.

With disappearing photos, stronger privacy controls, and a focus on authentic interactions, Instagram is clearly positioning Instants as a direct competitor to Snapchat’s core experience.
