India’s Semiconductor Push Gets Bigger: Government’s New ₹1.27 Lakh Crore Plan Targets Chips, Equipment and AI Hardware

India is significantly expanding its semiconductor ambitions with Semicon 2.0, a new phase of the country’s chip-development strategy aimed at building a complete semiconductor ecosystem rather than focusing only on chip manufacturing.
The expanded programme has a proposed government commitment of around ₹1.27 lakh crore, compared with approximately ₹76,000 crore under the earlier phase. The focus now extends across chip design, fabrication, packaging, semiconductor equipment, materials, research and development, and skilled talent.
From Chip Manufacturing to a Complete Ecosystem
India’s first semiconductor push concentrated heavily on establishing fabrication and packaging capabilities. With Semicon 2.0, the government is looking at a much broader technology supply chain.
This includes the businesses and technologies needed before and after a semiconductor is manufactured. The strategy covers areas such as chip design, semiconductor materials, manufacturing equipment, advanced packaging and research.
This broader approach could reduce India's dependence on overseas suppliers for critical parts of the semiconductor value chain.
Why Semiconductors Matter So Much
Semiconductors are used in almost every major modern technology product. Smartphones, computers, cars, industrial machines, telecommunications equipment, medical devices, artificial intelligence systems and defence technologies all depend on advanced chips.
As demand for artificial intelligence and connected devices continues to increase, countries around the world are competing to establish secure domestic semiconductor supply chains.
For India, developing this capability could help strengthen both its technology industry and manufacturing sector.
Government Expands Support Beyond Factories
One of the biggest changes under the expanded semiconductor strategy is the greater focus on upstream sectors.
These include semiconductor materials and manufacturing equipment, which are essential for operating chip factories. Supporting these areas could help India develop a more self-sufficient ecosystem instead of importing many of the inputs required by semiconductor plants.
The programme also places greater emphasis on chip design and research, potentially creating opportunities for Indian technology companies, startups and engineering professionals.
Major Semiconductor Projects Already Underway
India's semiconductor ecosystem is already beginning to take shape, with projects involving companies such as Micron Technology, Tata Electronics and SicSem at different stages of development.
Several Indian companies are also becoming involved in semiconductor packaging and related activities. The expansion of Semicon 2.0 is expected to provide additional support as these projects move toward commercial production.

The semiconductor push will receive another major spotlight later this month when SEMICON India 2026 takes place in New Delhi.
The fifth edition of the event is scheduled for September 17–19, 2026, at Yashobhoomi, with the official inauguration scheduled for September 17. The event is being positioned around the theme “Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem.”
The event is expected to bring together semiconductor companies, technology firms, investors, policymakers and industry experts.
What It Could Mean for Consumers
The impact may not be immediately visible to ordinary consumers, but a stronger domestic semiconductor industry could have long-term benefits.
Greater local manufacturing could eventually strengthen the supply of components used in smartphones, vehicles, electronics and other technology products. It could also support domestic production and potentially reduce vulnerabilities caused by disruptions in international supply chains.
However, building a competitive semiconductor ecosystem is a long-term process. Setting up advanced facilities requires significant investment, specialised technology, reliable infrastructure and highly trained professionals.
India Wants to Become a Global Chip Hub
The latest expansion shows that India's semiconductor strategy is moving beyond the goal of simply attracting a few large chip factories.
With Semicon 2.0, the government is attempting to develop an end-to-end semiconductor ecosystem covering design, manufacturing, packaging, equipment, materials and research.
If successfully implemented, the initiative could strengthen India's position in the global semiconductor industry while creating new opportunities across technology, electronics manufacturing and engineering.
