Important Update for PF Account Holders: If You Have Two UANs, Follow This Simple Process

Job changes have become increasingly common, but many employees face unexpected problems related to their Provident Fund (PF) accounts during this transition. One such issue is having more than one Universal Account Number (UAN). While it may seem harmless at first, multiple UANs can create serious hurdles in PF transfers, withdrawals, and claim settlements.
EPFO rule: One Member, One UAN
The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) follows a strict rule—One Member, One UAN. This means an employee should have only one UAN throughout their entire career. However, due to system errors or incomplete employer records, thousands of employees end up with two or more active UANs linked to their name.
Why do multiple UANs get generated?
The most common reason is failing to share the old UAN with the new employer at the time of joining. In such cases, the employer’s system automatically generates a fresh UAN. Another reason could be that the previous employer did not update the employee’s exit date, making the EPFO system assume the employee is still working there—leading to the creation of a new UAN at the new workplace.
How to merge two UANs online
If you have more than one UAN, there’s no need to panic. EPFO offers a completely online and straightforward method to merge accounts.
-
Visit unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in and log in using your current UAN and password.
-
Go to Online Services and select the “One Member – One EPF Account” option.
-
Carefully verify your personal details and KYC information. Selecting your current employer usually helps speed up the process.
-
Enter the details of your old PF Member ID or previous UAN and click on Get Details.
-
Verify the OTP sent to your registered mobile number, accept the declaration, and submit the request.
Why merging UANs is important
Having a single active UAN ensures smooth PF transfers, faster claim processing, and hassle-free withdrawals. It also helps maintain accurate service records and prevents future complications with EPFO services.
Employees are advised to resolve multiple UAN issues as early as possible to avoid delays or rejections during PF-related transactions.
