There's big news for Instagram users. Starting May 8th, Instagram is set to undergo a major change. Private chats on Meta's photo and video sharing platform will no longer be private. The company has made a significant decision regarding the end-to-end encryption feature it launched a few years ago to protect user privacy.
We spend several hours a day using our mobile phones, and much of this time is spent using social media. Privacy is a crucial factor when using social media platforms. Users are always mindful of this privacy. Especially when it comes to personal chats, every user wants their chats to be limited to them.
However, Meta has stated in a blog post that after May 8, 2026, messages sent on Instagram will no longer be completely private. The company is making this change to its privacy policy, sparking a new debate about user chatting. Will this affect Instagram users? It remains to be seen.
What is end-to-end encryption?
Instagram introduced end-to-end encryption in December 2023 to ensure users' private chats remain completely secure. End-to-end encryption ensures that conversations between two people cannot be read by third parties. Furthermore, the company that runs the platform cannot access those chats.
