Hero MotoCorp is preparing to make a major entry into India's electric motorcycle market. The company has confirmed plans to launch its first electric motorcycle in 2027, expanding beyond the electric scooters currently sold under its Vida brand.
Unlike its existing electric scooters, the upcoming motorcycles will be developed on dedicated platforms designed specifically for electric bikes.
Two new platforms will power Hero's electric motorcycles
Hero MotoCorp is developing its upcoming electric motorcycles around two platforms called UBEX and VXZ. The company first showcased these platforms as concepts at EICMA 2025.
The two platforms are expected to serve different types of riders.
The UBEX platform is being developed for a street-oriented electric motorcycle. The bike is expected to focus on everyday city riding, practicality and comfortable performance.
The VXZ platform, meanwhile, is being developed for a more powerful and adventure-oriented electric motorcycle. Hero is working with American electric motorcycle manufacturer Zero Motorcycles on this platform.
Hero has also filed patents in India related to the design of a VXZ-based motorcycle, indicating that development of the model is progressing.
Hero wants to build a proper electric motorcycle
Hero already has experience in the EV segment through its Vida electric scooters. However, the upcoming motorcycles will not simply be existing scooter technology adapted to a motorcycle-shaped design.
The company is developing the new platforms specifically around the requirements of motorcycle riders. Performance, riding dynamics, climbing ability and range are expected to be important areas of focus.
The VXZ-based models could offer stronger performance and be aimed at riders looking for adventure-oriented electric motorcycles. The UBEX platform is expected to cater more towards everyday urban riding.
When will Hero's electric bike launch?
Hero MotoCorp has confirmed that its first electric motorcycle is planned for launch in 2027. More details about the final production models, specifications, battery capacity, range and pricing are expected to emerge closer to the launch.
The entry of Hero MotoCorp into electric motorcycles could significantly increase competition in India's rapidly expanding EV two-wheeler market, particularly as established manufacturers and electric vehicle companies compete for customers looking beyond conventional electric scooters.
With dedicated motorcycle platforms and technology developed specifically for electric bikes, Hero's upcoming models could mark an important new chapter in the company's EV strategy.
