Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayak Chaturthi, will be celebrated on 27 August 2025. Lord Ganesha, worshipped as Vighnaharta, Lambodar, and Vinayak, is welcomed into homes and pandals with great devotion. The festival is marked by daily puja, aarti, and offerings of sweets and delicacies to Bappa for 5, 7, 9, or 10 days.
While beautifully crafted idols are easily available in the market, most are made from plaster of Paris (POP), which harms rivers and soil after immersion. To protect the environment, many devotees are now shifting towards eco-friendly idols. The good news is that you can also make a beautiful and natural Ganpati idol at home with simple materials.
1. Clay Ganesha
The most traditional and eco-friendly option is a clay idol.
-
Take a flat plate with raised edges and apply coconut oil on it.
-
Mix a little water into natural clay and knead it until soft.
-
Shape different parts of Lord Ganesha’s body and slowly join them together.
-
Use a toothpick to carve details, like a lotus.
-
Dry the idol in the shade (not under direct sunlight).
-
Once dry, decorate it using turmeric, kumkum, or natural colors.
2. Ganpati from Flour
If clay isn’t available, wheat flour or maida can be used.
-
Knead the flour with water until it forms a soft dough.
-
Shape the idol of Bappa with your hands.
-
Paint lightly with natural colors.
This idol dissolves quickly in water, making it safe for immersion.
3. Ganpati with Turmeric
Turmeric not only gives a beautiful golden color but also has sacred significance.
-
Mix turmeric with flour (or maida) and water to knead a dough.
-
Shape the idol carefully and add details like eyes using buttons or natural colors.
-
The bright yellow idol looks unique and divine.
4. Paper Mache Ganesha
Old newspapers can also be turned into a beautiful idol.
-
Tear newspapers into small pieces and soak them in water.
-
Mix the pulp with flour to make a thick paste.
-
Mold the idol of Lord Ganesha and leave it to dry.
-
Once dry, paint it with eco-friendly, natural colors.
