A major update has emerged regarding the Employees' Provident Fund Organization (EPFO). According to information received through an RTI, there are 3.091 million inactive PF accounts in the country as of March 31, 2026, with unclaimed funds worth ₹9,330 crore stuck in them.
This information came to light when the central government implemented the EPF Scheme 2026. This new scheme will be implemented from June 29, 2026. It will replace the previous EPF Scheme of 1953. The new scheme aims to simplify EPF rules and digitize services.
According to RTI data, there were 3.183 million inactive accounts as of March 31, 2025. This figure has decreased by 92,000 to 3.091 million in a year. Furthermore, the unclaimed amount has decreased by ₹851 crore, from ₹10,181 crore to ₹9,330 crore.
According to the report, this amount is so large that, according to current estimates, it could fund the creation of three new IITs in the country. However, in the RTI request, the EPFO declined to provide details of Aadhaar-linked dormant accounts, information on accounts with balances exceeding ₹5 lakh, and auto-settlement data, citing confidentiality.
