But the twist is that when you back up your chats to Google Drive or iCloud, they aren't automatically encrypted or locked. End-to-end encryption must be enabled to keep the backup secure.

Turning on end-to-end encryption for WhatsApp chat backup simply means putting a 'digital lock' on your data. According to Meta AI, if end-to-end encryption is not turned on for chat backup on WhatsApp, then your chats will remain safe in WhatsApp, no one will be able to read them. Not even Meta or WhatsApp. But if the feature is not turned on for chat backup, then when you take a backup of your chats on Google Drive or iCloud (iPhone), then it is not end-to-end encrypted 'by default' i.e. automatically. It has to be turned on.

Why is end-to-end encryption necessary for chat backup?

1. No one will be able to read your chats.
If you don't turn on end-to-end encryption for your chat backups, there's a chance Google Drive or iCloud will access your files. However, after you turn on encryption, your backup is locked with a password or a 64-digit key. Neither Google or Apple, nor even WhatsApp , can read it.

2. An extra layer of security in the cloud:
If your Google account is hacked, your WhatsApp chats will also be leaked. With encryption turned on, even if your Google Drive is hacked, your chats will only appear as garbage code. It's impossible to open them without a password.

How to keep it on?

• To use this feature, you will first have to open WhatsApp.
• After this go to the profile icon.
• Then click on Chats option.
• After this click on Chat Backup.
• Then you turn on the toggle in front of end to end encryption.

Use Passkey

You'll have two options: create a new password or verify yourself using a passkey. This will also protect your WhatsApp chat backup.
