UPI wrong transaction: Be cautious when using UPI to make payments. Even a slight carelessness can increase the risk of money being transferred to the wrong UPI ID. Can you immediately recover a payment made using the wrong UPI ID? Let's find out...
From tea stalls to large shopping malls, UPI is now the dominant payment method. In March 2026, India saw 22.64 billion UPI transactions, a testament to UPI's popularity. But, amidst this rapid advancement of technology, a nagging question always lingers in our minds: If money is accidentally transferred to the wrong UPI ID, is there an "Undo" button to get it back?
It's important to understand that there's no magic button like "Undo" or "Ctrl+Z" in UPI apps. This is a one-time, real-time process. Once you enter your secret PIN and click OK, the money is immediately transferred from your account to the other person. Even the bank can't reverse this transaction without the consent of the account holder. However, it's not as if there's no way to recover money transferred to the wrong UPI ID.

As soon as you realize the money has gone to the wrong person, don't panic. First, call or send a message to the number to which the money has been sent. Often, the person on the other end is honest and will return the money upon speaking. However, if they refuse or don't answer the phone, immediately report it to your UPI app and bank. Every banking app has a "Report Issue" option; using this, you can register the transaction as a "Dispute."
If you don't get immediate help from your bank, visit the NPCL portal, the same organization that operates UPI. File your complaint there under the "Dispute Redressal Mechanism" section. Keep your transaction ID, date, and screenshots. Alternatively, you can file a complaint directly through the BHIM app. This process gives your case an official status, which the bank cannot ignore.
When the bank doesn't listen, where should I knock?
Sometimes, lower-level bank officials are lax in handling such matters. In such a situation, you shouldn't give up. Contact your bank's Nodal Officer or Grievance Department. If you don't receive a resolution within 30 days, you can file a complaint with the RBI Ombudsman. The RBI Ombudsman is a powerful forum for addressing such issues in digital transactions.
Caution is the only protection
It's said that 'prevention is better than cure.' To avoid these headaches with UPI transactions, follow these smart steps:
- Re 1 test: Before sending a large amount, always send Re 1 to confirm whether the money is going to the right place or not.
- Use of QR code: To avoid typing mistakes, it is safest to scan QR code instead of mobile number.
- Double-check the name: Before entering the PIN, carefully read the receiver's name that appears on the screen.Top Videos
