The much-awaited sequel Dhurandhar 2, starring Ranveer Singh, has created massive buzz even before its release, reportedly crossing the ₹100 crore mark in advance bookings worldwide. However, despite the strong anticipation, the film has landed in controversy ahead of its theatrical debut.
Legal notice over portrayal of Sikh character
A Sikh activist, Vicky Thomas Singh, has reportedly sent a legal notice against the film’s makers to the Central Board of Film Certification and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
The complaint claims that Ranveer Singh portrays a Sikh character in the movie but is shown smoking cigarettes in several scenes. According to the complainant, such depiction goes against the religious beliefs and cultural values of the Sikh community.
The notice demands that all scenes showing the character smoking be removed from the film. It also asks the makers to issue a public apology for allegedly hurting religious sentiments. The complainant warned that further legal action could be taken if the demands are not addressed.
Political reaction adds to controversy
The issue has also drawn attention from the political sphere. Shiromani Akali Dal Delhi president Paramjit Singh Sarna publicly criticized the film.
He shared a poster from the song “Pralay” from Dhurandhar 2, where Ranveer Singh is seen wearing a turban while holding a cigarette. Sarna called the depiction “highly objectionable” and said it violates Sikh religious principles.
He urged authorities to investigate the matter and asked that the controversial visuals be removed.
Sequel to a massive blockbuster
Dhurandhar 2 is the sequel to Dhurandhar, which released on December 5 last year and became a global blockbuster, reportedly earning over ₹1,300 crore worldwide.
Both films are directed and written by Aditya Dhar, who is also among the producers of the project.
What happens next?
With legal complaints and public criticism emerging just days before release, the makers may face pressure to edit or remove the disputed scenes to avoid further controversy.
