Puja Samagri (Items Required for Worship)
To perform Dev Uthani Ekadashi Puja, you will need idols or pictures of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi, a small platform or chowki, yellow cloth, incense, lamp, ghee, flowers, fruits, Tulsi leaves, Panchamrit (a mixture of milk, curd, honey, ghee, and Ganga water), sweets, and unbroken rice grains. Sesame seeds are also essential, as rice should not be used on Ekadashi.
How to Perform the Puja
Begin your day by waking up early, taking a holy bath, and wearing yellow clothes, symbolizing divinity and purity. Meditate on Lord Vishnu and take a vow to observe the fast (vrat). Clean the puja area and place the idols or images of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi on a platform.
Offer Ganga water, yellow sandalwood paste, flowers, Tulsi leaves, and Panchamrit to Lord Vishnu. Prepare satvik food, kheer, fruits, and sweets as offerings. Tulsi leaves must be included in all offerings to Lord Vishnu.
In the evening, make a pavilion using sugarcane sticks and draw the footprints of Lord Vishnu in the center. Cover it with a cloth, light a lamp, and burn incense. Listen to the Dev Uthani Ekadashi Katha, perform aarti, and then awaken Lord Vishnu by chanting the mantra:
“Uttishtha Govinda Tyaja Nidram Jagatpataye.”
Finally, distribute Charanamrit or Prasad among the devotees and partake in it yourself.
Mantras to Chant
-
Main Mantra: “Om Namo Narayanaya.”
-
Invocation Mantra:
“Om Narayanaya Vidmahe,
Vasudevaya Dhimahi,
Tanno Vishnuh Prachodayat.”
Offerings for Lord Vishnu
On this sacred day, devotees should offer Panchamrit made from milk, honey, ghee, sugar, and curd, as it is believed to bring good fortune and divine blessings. Offering Panjiri, a traditional sweet dish, is also considered highly auspicious.
Offerings for Tulsi Mata
Offer red flowers, vermilion, and a red dupatta to the Tulsi plant. Light a ghee diya near Tulsi and offer her leaves to Lord Vishnu. Remember not to pluck Tulsi leaves on the day of Ekadashi; they should be collected a day before the puja.
