Renowned journalist Vinod Mehta recounts this incident in his biography of Meena Kumari, "Meena Kumari - A Classic Biography." It is said that Meena Kumari and her husband were traveling for the shooting of Kamal Amrohi's film. While passing through the Shivpuri area of Madhya Pradesh, their car ran out of petrol. They decided to stay overnight. Suddenly, some armed men arrived and surrounded them. It is said that they had probably arrived with the intention of looting, but when they learned that Meena Kumari was in the car, everyone was astonished. The robbers suddenly dropped their weapons and treated her with respect. They even asked her to accompany them and arranged for her accommodation.

The next stage of this story is quite interesting. Meena Kumari, her husband, and the entire team were treated with respect by the bandits at their hideout overnight. Later that morning, the bandit leader told Meena Kumari that he was her biggest fan. He asked for her autograph and asked her to cut his palm with a knife. Meena Kumari was afraid and found the demand quite strange, but she hesitantly signed. It is said that the bandit was Amritlal, a very feared bandit of the time.
