Dengue cases in Delhi and Gurugram have decreased significantly this year compared to the previous year. According to the Gurugram Health Department, there were 151 dengue cases by October last year, whereas only 64 cases have been reported this year. Similarly, data from the Delhi MCD shows 1,136 dengue cases so far this year, compared to 3,581 cases during the same period last year. Despite heavy rainfall this year, dengue numbers have fallen. Experts explain the possible reasons behind this decline.
Dr. Subhash Giri from the Department of Medicine at RML Hospital, Delhi, says that dengue cases are currently lower than last year, which is reassuring. He notes that several factors may have contributed to the decline, including better public awareness and improved fogging operations.
A Delhi MCD official added that this year, a large-scale anti-larvae campaign was carried out. Focused efforts in parks and JJ colonies helped significantly reduce mosquito breeding. Additionally, people were more attentive to cleaning rooftops, balconies, and stagnant water sources in their homes, further limiting mosquito growth.
Is the weather responsible too?
According to Dr. Giri, the weather in Delhi and surrounding areas has been quite different this year. The heat was less intense compared to last year, which prevented the mosquito breeding cycle from progressing fully. Although rainfall was higher, instances of severe waterlogging were fewer, resulting in fewer breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
Dr. Giri warns that while current numbers are low, the trend may not continue. People should remain cautious and seek medical advice if they notice any dengue symptoms. Extra care should be taken for children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immunity.
