We often pay special attention to facial skincare while overlooking our hands and feet. However, prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause tanning and make these areas appear darker, duller and uneven in tone. Instead of immediately spending money on expensive skincare products, some simple ingredients commonly found at home can be used as part of a basic skincare routine.
Natural ingredients are popular for home skincare because they are generally affordable and easy to find. If your hands and feet have developed a tan, these five remedies may help exfoliate the skin and improve its overall appearance.
1. Try a Besan and Yogurt Pack
Gram flour, commonly known as besan, has traditionally been used in Indian skincare routines.
To make a simple pack, combine gram flour, a small amount of turmeric, yogurt and lemon juice to form a thick paste. Apply it evenly to your hands and feet and leave it on for around 10–15 minutes.
Once it begins to dry, rinse it off gently with water. You can follow this with a light application of moisturizer.
2. Make a Homemade Coffee Scrub
Exfoliation can help remove dead skin cells and make the skin feel smoother.
For a homemade scrub, combine coffee powder, a little honey, lemon juice, turmeric and a small amount of sugar. Apply the mixture gently to your hands and feet using circular motions.
Avoid rubbing aggressively, as excessive scrubbing can irritate the skin. Rinse thoroughly after a few minutes and apply moisturizer.
3. Give the Tomato Remedy a Try
Tomatoes are another commonly used ingredient in traditional home skincare.
Cut a tomato in half and apply a small amount of coffee powder and honey to its surface. You can add a little lemon juice if your skin tolerates it. Gently rub the tomato over the tanned areas using circular movements.
For a milder version, you can mix the ingredients with a little yogurt and apply the mixture as a short-duration pack before washing it off.
4. Use Milk and Turmeric
Milk and turmeric have long been used in traditional Indian beauty routines.
Mix a small amount of turmeric into milk and apply the mixture to the affected areas with a cotton pad or clean fingertips. Leave it on for a short while and then rinse with water.
You can also use rose water as a gentle finishing step before moisturizing.
5. Don't Forget Regular Moisturizing
Home remedies alone are not enough if the skin continues to become dry and exposed to the sun.
Make it a habit to moisturize your hands and feet regularly, particularly after bathing or washing them with soap. Keeping the skin hydrated can help maintain a smoother and healthier appearance.
Most importantly, apply sunscreen to your hands and feet whenever they are exposed to sunlight, just as you would on your face. Consistent sun protection can help prevent further tanning and uneven pigmentation.
A Quick Note Before Trying Home Remedies
Natural does not automatically mean irritation-free. Lemon and other acidic ingredients can irritate sensitive skin, especially if used frequently or before sun exposure. Always do a small patch test first, avoid broken or irritated skin, and stop using any remedy if it causes burning, redness or discomfort.
For persistent or significant darkening that does not seem related to sun exposure, it is better to consult a dermatologist rather than relying solely on home remedies.
