After becoming victims of cyber fraud, people are making hasty mistakes that cyber fraudsters are directly exploiting. When filing complaints on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP), most victims enter incorrect transaction IDs. This prevents banks from freezing the relevant accounts in a timely manner. In some cases, this gives fraudsters time to transfer money from accounts to other accounts.
80 percent of people are making the same mistake
According to the Cyber Crime Police Station, approximately 80 percent of cases involve incorrectly entered transaction IDs. Many victims enter numbers without carefully reviewing bank messages or screenshots when filing complaints. When the bank reconciles the relevant transactions, the information doesn't match. The case is then referred back to the police, and the victim must then be contacted to update the correct information. This entire process takes several hours.
The first 24 hours are crucial in cyber fraud cases. If the fraudster's bank account is frozen during this time, the chances of recovering the money increase significantly. However, entering the wrong transaction ID can delay action.
According to police data, 736 cases have been registered in the district's cybercrime police station in the two and a half years since its opening. During this period, cybercriminals have defrauded approximately ₹200 crore, while the police have only been able to recover approximately ₹45 crore. Fraud in the name of investment, digital arrests, fraudulent trading apps, KYC updates, and fraudulent calls have been the most common cases of fraud.
Keep this in mind
In case of fraud, the police should first note down the correct transaction information and UTR number from the bank. After this, immediately file a complaint through the 1930 helpline or the NCRP portal. Even a single error in the complaint can jeopardize the entire process.
How to lodge a complaint
- Call the 1930 helpline immediately.
- Visit the portal www.cybercrime.gov.in
- Enter the correct transaction ID and UTR number as per the bank message.
- Upload screenshot and bank details
- Save your complaint number
Caution is essential to avoid cyber fraud. Entering all the information correctly on the NCRP portal will help both banks and police process their work faster.
