A political controversy has erupted in Pakistan after reports of an event being organized in Karachi to mark the death anniversary of Burhan Wani, a former commander of the banned militant group Hizbul Mujahideen.
The event has drawn criticism because of Wani’s association with militancy in Jammu and Kashmir. The controversy comes at a time when Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) has witnessed protests and public dissatisfaction over various issues.
Event Organized in Karachi
According to reports, a gathering was planned at the Arts Council of Pakistan, Karachi, where supporters were invited to attend a program commemorating Burhan Wani.
Posters linked to the event reportedly appealed to people to participate in large numbers. The program was said to have received support from members associated with the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and groups aligned with the Kashmir issue.
Who Was Burhan Wani?
Burhan Wani was a militant commander of Hizbul Mujahideen who became widely known through social media campaigns.
He was killed by Indian security forces in 2016 in Jammu and Kashmir. His death triggered large-scale unrest in parts of the region.
The Indian government and security agencies have described him as a militant figure, while some groups in Pakistan and separatist organizations have portrayed him differently.
Statements From PPP Leaders
Reports quoted local PPP leaders as saying that a rally is held every year on July 8 to mark Wani’s death anniversary.
A PPP district-level leader, Liaquat Ali, reportedly appealed to party workers to participate in the gathering and said that Pakistani and Kashmiri flags would be present at the event.
Criticism Over Kashmir Narrative
The event has intensified criticism from Indian commentators and officials, who argue that Pakistan’s support for figures linked with militancy contradicts its claims of promoting peace.
Former Jammu and Kashmir Police chief S.P. Vaid also commented on developments in PoK, saying that protests there reflect dissatisfaction among local residents.
He alleged that authorities in Pakistan have used force against demonstrators rather than addressing their concerns.
Why Is This Issue Significant?
The controversy highlights the continuing political dispute between India and Pakistan over Jammu and Kashmir.
While Pakistan has repeatedly raised the Kashmir issue internationally, India has criticized Islamabad over its alleged support for groups and individuals associated with militancy.
The Karachi event and the unrest in PoK have once again brought questions about regional politics, public dissent, and the competing narratives surrounding Kashmir to the forefront.
