BMW has expanded its luxury SUV lineup in India with the launch of the new X1 Long Wheelbase (LWB). Priced at ₹49.90 lakh ex-showroom, the new version focuses primarily on improving rear-seat comfort by offering more cabin space.
The X1 LWB is currently available in India in the sDrive18i M Sport variant. Buyers looking for a diesel-powered X1 can still choose the standard-wheelbase version.
Longer Wheelbase Means More Rear Seat Space
The biggest change in the new X1 LWB is its increased dimensions.
The SUV measures 4,616 mm in length, 1,845 mm in width and 1,641 mm in height. Its wheelbase has been extended by 108 mm to 2,802 mm, while its overall length is 116 mm greater than the standard X1.
BMW says the additional wheelbase translates into 109 mm of extra knee room for rear passengers. The rear-seat cushion has also been extended by 15 mm, making the second row more comfortable for longer journeys.
Petrol Engine Gets More Power
The BMW X1 LWB is powered by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine.
The engine produces 156 hp and 230 Nm of torque and is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Power is sent to the front wheels.
While the torque figure remains at 230 Nm, the latest petrol version produces 22 hp more than the previous petrol X1.
Exterior Gets BMW's Latest Design Touches
The X1 LWB retains the familiar design of the standard X1 while incorporating BMW's latest styling elements.
It features the brand's signature kidney grille, adaptive LED headlights and LED daytime running lights. Other exterior highlights include 18-inch alloy wheels, satin-finish roof rails, flush-fitting door handles, a panoramic glass roof, a shark-fin antenna, rear spoiler and LED tail lamps.
Premium Features Inside the Cabin
The dashboard layout remains similar to the standard X1, but the LWB version places greater emphasis on rear passenger comfort.
The feature list includes electrically adjustable front seats, driver-seat memory, powered ORVMs, dual-zone climate control, rear AC vents and a powered tailgate.
Other highlights include a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, BMW Digital Key, Park Assist Plus, Reverse Assistant, integrated navigation and connected-car technology.
The SUV also gets over-the-air software updates, voice assistance, USB Type-C ports and multiple driving modes.
Strong Safety Package
BMW has equipped the X1 LWB with a comprehensive safety package. It includes eight airbags, ABS with EBD, dynamic stability control, traction control and tyre-pressure monitoring.
The SUV also gets an electronic parking brake, front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera and ISOFIX child-seat mounts.
Advanced driver-assistance systems are also included to provide additional support while driving.
Rivals in the Indian Luxury SUV Market
With its larger rear cabin and premium features, the BMW X1 LWB is positioned against luxury compact SUVs such as the Mercedes-Benz GLA, Audi Q3 and Volvo XC40.
At ₹49.90 lakh ex-showroom, the new X1 LWB is aimed at buyers who want the driving experience and premium appeal of a luxury SUV while giving greater importance to rear-seat space and passenger comfort.
